HISTORY OF THE WREXHAM OVER 50`s FORUM
This is an ageing society we live in and demographic changes will significantly change the balance of the population. It is estimated that by 2025 half the population will be over 50.
Realising this in 2003 the Welsh Assembly Government issued a strategy for older people in Wales.
This is a ten-year strategy, which reflects the United Nations principles. These state that older people have the right to independence, participation, care and self-fulfilment and dignity.
Valuing Older people
Older people have a wealth of experience and knowledge that enriches the lives of the communities. There are however many negative images of older people and some people believe that their contribution is less valued than it should be. These perceptions translate into age discrimination, social exclusion, isolation, poverty and gaps between generations. These perceptions need to be challenged and the attitude of people changed.
A Changing Society
The changes in the population mean that a higher proportion of people will be post retirement age. Not all people however want to give up work, some want to remain in employment and so barriers for compulsory retirement need to be removed.
In a sense older people are being discriminated against by not being allowed to work for as long as they wish. Older people should also if they wish be allowed to continue with education and this can be achieved by removing barriers to learning.
Living longer and healthier.
As people get older it is important that the added years are accompanied by good health. This helps older people to remain active have a better quality of life and therefore have more opportunities. This in turn will reduce the demand for health and social care services.
Coping with increased dependency, health, social care and housing.
It is important that there is the provision of a high quality service and support system, which enables older people to live as independently as possible. The environment should be suitable and safe and primary and specialist services should be organised to be responsive to the needs of older people.
In broad terms the strategy aims to tackle discrimination against older people promote positive images of ageing and give older people a stronger voice in society.
