Come & Join Us - Wrexham Coalition for Independent Living

28 Feb 2011 At a meeting on 1st February 2011 a Coalition for Independent Living was born in Wrexham. The Coalition will be led and controlled by the people who it serves with three people already agreeing to be it’s first trustees. They are now in the process of drawing up a constitution to govern the operation of the Coalition

What is Disability?

The Equality Act 2010 describes a person has a disability if:

(a) A person has a physical or mental impairment, and (b) the impairment has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on the person’s ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities.

Long-term is defined as an impairment lasting or has lasted at least 12 months or is likely to last the rest of the life of the person affected.

What is Independent Living?

Independent Living is not a service, It is a way of life. It means disabled people take responsibility for their lives and live them how they choose, irrespective of the type or complexity of their impairment or condition.

The short answer is that it's whatever the disabled people of Wrexham want it to be!

What is a Coalition for Independent Living?

Coalitions are all different across Wales and the UK from campaigning organisations to organisations that provide services and advice. They can have a physical presence in the form of a building or are a proactive membership group who address issues that will enable disabled people to have choice and independence, equally participating in the political, social, economic and cultural life within our community.

What is a Coalition for Independent Living Wrexham?

It will be a Coalition that will tackle disability issues locally and nationally representing all disabilities equally and without discrimination.

What is important is what happens in Wrexham should be what works for WREXHAM!
