AVOW Welcomes ‘We Mind The Gap’ Gappie on Placement

I’m Aaron and I’m a ‘Gappie’ with We Mind The Gap, a non-profit charity organisation that helps young people get into work. We Mind The Gap gave me this opportunity by giving me different work placements catering to my interests. Over the last two work placements I have spent my time in AVOW. A span of nine weeks trying to learn and grow as much as I can. While doing this placement I have been spending two days each of these nine weeks with the AVOW team. During these days I have been here, there and everywhere spending time and learning about the different people that make up the AVOW team. I have been mostly working with business support, social media marketing and over in ShopMobility.

In ShopMobility it is mostly working with people. Seeing the regulars that come every week, getting to know them and fall into their routine and meeting new people that are signing up or people that I haven’t met before. Learning how to take care of the scooters, bringing the scooters in and out. Learning about boot scooters and how to take them apart. How the different systems in ShopMobility work. Learning how to sign people up and going through the sign up process myself. I have helped on the desk, taking phone calls, making reservations for people to take out the boot scooters. Learning what having ShopMobility brings to Wrexham town, how it has helped people get out and about who without ShopMobility wouldn’t be getting this opportunity. Also learning about the different staff members who work in ShopMobility. As well as making lots of coffee and tea for the people who come in and use the warm space.

With the social media marketing side of AVOW it has gotten me to learn a lot and use a lot more of my creative side. From making posters and making social media posts on the official AVOW facebook. Learning more about analytics and certain trends on social media. Learning about what makes the AVOW brand. While doing the marketing it has given me opportunities such as going to the coffee morning in Gwersyllt Community Hub talking about photography, different photographers and what makes a good photo. Then helping out with Volunteers Week helping set up the tech and taking photos at the event. It has gotten me to incorporate my biggest love of photography into a job.

I’ve also been working with business support, by setting up for events by organising and planning them while also helping run them. Helping to support people by getting them the things that they need. Also making sure that everything is running smoothly and everything is running well.

Since doing this placement in AVOW I have thought more about my community and what the people at AVOW have been doing to help that community. I have learned so much and I have so much more that I can learn. It has opened more doors for me and helped me excel in what I thought. I never once have not wanted to come in while coming in. I have enjoyed everything I’ve been doing here and I’ve enjoyed everybody I’ve been working with at AVOW.

While being here at AVOW even for just 9 weeks I have felt comfortable and have a genuine interest in what I am doing here. I came to AVOW as a placement for We Mind The Gap but I have enjoyed my time here working with amazing people in an amazing environment. I have learned so much about the different people that work here day in and day out. Learning why and how they help the community around me and around all of us. I would most definitely do this again.
