Nest - Welsh Government's Fuel Poverty Scheme

Households who find it hard to heat their homes are being encouraged to apply to Nest, a Welsh Government scheme which aims to make the least energy efficient homes warmer and cosier.

Nest is open to all householders in Wales, and provides advice on saving energy, money management, fuel tariffs, benefit entitlement and home improvements to help reduce the cost of energy bills.

Householders who own or privately rent their home and receive a means tested benefit, may also be eligible for free home improvements. These may include a new central heating boiler, loft insulation, cavity wall and solid wall insulation, draught proofing for doors and windows and green technology.

If you come across households in need of energy efficiency advice or home improvements, don’t forget you can refer them to Nest for help. Our advice team are ready to take calls on Freephone 0808 808 2244 or visit www.nestwales.org.uk

HMRC 2015/16 Grant Funding

HMRC has £2 million to allocate to the voluntary, community and social enterprise sector (VCSE) to provide advice and support to HMRC customers who need extra help in understanding and complying with their obligations and claiming their entitlements.

Registered charities, voluntary and community organisations, social enterprises, mutual and co-operatives based in the UK can apply to one of two categories:

  • Category One - offers grants of up to £350,000
    • This is open to VCSE organisations to complement HMRC's new service, launched in May 2014, for customers who need extra help.

This is specifically to target HMRC’s hardest to reach customers or those whose relationship with HMRC has broken down, who need independent advice and support or can/will not interact with HMRC for whatever reason. VCSE organisations must be able to help these customers to form or rebuild a relationship with HMRC that enables them to engage directly with HMRC in the future.

  • Category Two - offers grants of up to £200,000
    • This is open to VCSE organisations with the expertise and infrastructure to take referrals by telephone or email from HMRC extra help service to assist customers who need independent advice and support with more complex tax issues, such as complex PAYE issues, completion of Self-Assessment tax returns - often from incomplete records, claims for Special Relief and appeals. Applicants would be responsible for bringing individual cases to conclusion.

Application forms (Category One or Two) are available upon request by sending an email to mailbox.stakeholder@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk

The deadline for applications is 31 October 2014.

Wales Africa Gold Star Awards

Nominations are now open for the fourth Wales Africa Gold Star Awards, to be hosted by First Minister for Wales, the Rt Hon Carwyn Jones AM, at the Senedd on the evening of Thursday 4th December

The Gold Star Awards, piloted by BUILD and WCVA in 2008 and endorsed by the UN, aim to ‘recognise the best to inspire the rest’ in volunteering and community linking projects between Wales and Africa.

Anyone can nominate a third sector organisation they feel is deserving of recognition for their contribution to civil society linking between Wales and Africa - not just community links, but health & diaspora links, international NGOs and Welsh charities too - by completing the very short nomination form (3 questions), which encourages links to 'Tell their Story'.
