Welcome Amy Jones
We would like you to welcome Amy Jones to the AVOW team as the new Community Development Officer.
As they have started their new position here at AVOW we got to ask them some questions about themselves and their new position.
Why did you go for the Community and Development Officer Role?
The community development officer role at AVOW appealed to me as it means that I will be working with diverse groups of people and organisations, all of which do so much invaluable work in Wrexham. I will be working on volunteer placements and good governance. AVOW safeguard staff, volunteers and the public through good Governance, policies and procedures and that is important to me. The role means that I can continue to work with volunteers and and organisations who want to use their time and skills to make Wrexham a better place, ensure that people dont get forgotten in their time of need and provide opportunities for essential things in life like connection, art, music, dance and sharing a cuppa together!
What are you most looking forward to in the Community and Development Officer position?
I have already met some amazing volunteers and organisations and know I will meet more! People who want to use their life experience to support others and people with invaluable skills. Anyone can be a volunteer so I get to meet people from all different backgrounds and learn from them. This quote sums up what I will get to do on a daily basis:
‘When I was a boy and I would see scary things on the news my mother would say to me, Look for the helpers, you will always find people who are helping’ Mister Rogers
What experience do you have in volunteering?
I started volunteering when I was 19 at the Oxfam shop in Wrexham, my volunteer manager Swati was really supportive of me and I loved getting to see all the clothes and books that were donated and decorating the window. I even got a Millenium volunteer certificate from AVOW! Since then I have had some amazing experiences as a volunteer, travelling to different places in the UK and abroad as a UNA Exchange and VSO youth volunteer.
I have met some of my best friends and gained loads more confidence and skills through volunteering. The skills and experience I got from volunteering have helped me to get interesting jobs across the UK including working at the Oxfam office in London. Volunteering always appealed to me as a way of learning because it is practical and real life. I am now a volunteer trustee at Wrexham Citizens Advice and Brymbo and Tanyfron Regeneration Trust.
Since starting their position here in AVOW they have already had a running start. They immediately got into the flow that we have at AVOW setting up meetings with new volunteers and finding new places for people to volunteer.
They have already been such a massive help to us here at AVOW but they have also been helping support the Wrexham Community for a lot longer.
If you want to volunteer but have no clue where to start you can get in contact with us here at AVOW. From there we can find out what you would like to do to volunteer and where you would like to volunteer.
Or if you would rather go directly to the places where you can volunteer there are volunteering opportunities here at AVOW or there is the AVOW facebook page where we post about volunteering roles. There is also the AVOW Voluntary and Community Team page where they post and share all the time about different volunteering opportunities.
