2026 Volunteers’ Week – Daytime Event gives a ‘Heartfelt Thanks’ to Volunteers.

    [vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]

A fantastic afternoon celebrating volunteering at Ial Restaurant (04/06/2026) for Volunteers’ Week. We were thrilled to have the new Mayor of Wrexham, Cllr Jeremy Kent to give out certificates for these amazing volunteers.

The event was introduced by Amy, AVOW’s Community Development Officer with a focus on Volunteering and Governance. The event was hosted by our Chair of Trustees Peter Howell, who many people will be familiar with as the host of Wrexham City Radio’s Community Show on Wednesday (between 4 and 6).

The Mayor then spoke about the importance of youth volunteering, and the impact that it has had on him. As someone who volunteers their time to support youth volunteers, he spoke passionately about how they were working to make Wrexham a better, more connected place.

During the event, we heard from Bryn Law, the Welsh National Football Commentator. He had this to say to the ‘fantastic’ volunteers:

    [/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

“What the town is all about is, is exactly what you exemplify […] all the things that make our community a very special community. So to all of you, a very a heartfelt thanks very much for all the work you do and continue to do.” – Bryn Law

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Amy spoke about all the work that AVOW do, and the ways in which AVOW is here to support charities of all shapes and sizes. She spoke about how AVOW can support with governance queries, managing and organising volunteers, helping explore funding options and grant writing, and engaging with, and influencing policy both locally and nationally.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

It was a privilege to join so many dedicated volunteers and celebrate the incredible contribution they make to communities across Wrexham.
The afternoon was a reminder of the huge difference volunteers make every day — supporting others, bringing people together, preserving local heritage, running community groups, and helping those most in need. Their commitment, compassion, and generosity are truly inspiring.
Congratulations to all of the nominees and award winners, and thank you to every volunteer for the time and energy you give to make Wrexham such a special place. – Cllr Jeremy Kent, Mayor of Wrexham

    [/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

All in all it was a fantastic afternoon, helped along by some amazing cookies and tea and coffee provided by Ial Resteraunt. It was such a privilege to celebrate volunteers throughout Wrexham, doing everything from offering advice to people, through to taking photographs and social media, to trustees and those that work on boards. These volunteers give their time to make such an amazing difference.

A big thank you to all the people who came and helped us celebrate Volunteers’ Week! and a big thank you to all the volunteers that make it happen!

    [/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

You are the heart of our communities, and today was a fitting celebration of everything you do. – Cllr Jeremy Kent, Mayor of Wrexham

  • Celebrating Youth Volunteering – AVOW Volunteers’ Week Youth Event a Success

Celebrating Youth Volunteering – AVOW Volunteers’ Week Youth Event a Success

[vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]A fantastic evening celebrating youth and youth volunteering at Xplore! last night (02/06/2026) for Volunteers’ Week. We were thrilled to have the new Mayor of Wrexham, Cllr Jeremy Kent to give out certificates, alongside our Trustee, Jayne Unalkat.

During the event, we heard form Paralympian Sabrina Fortune who spoke about their experience volunteering as a coach in Deeside and Wrexham, and the struggle for finding volunteer coaches. They also spoke about the volunteering done at the Paralympics, and their vital role in ensuring their sport can continue. Without volunteers the Paralympics wouldn’t have had officials, or people to guide the competitors around the massive arenas.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Amy spoke about the impact of AVOW’s Young Influencers. AVOW’s Young Influencers are a group of young people who work together to examine grant applications, and make real decisions about funding local projects. One local project that they funded was the ‘First Night In Care Bags’.

Gavin Cass from Youth Shedz Cymru, talked about their First night In Care Bags. The First Night In Care Bags project is designed by children who have experienced what their first night in care looks like, and what kind of things they might need. The bags contain things like blankets, a teddy knitted by some ‘knitting nanas’, toiletries, and other useful bits and pieces. Each bag is put together by a youth member of the Youth Shedz project, volunteers making a difference.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

“It was a real privilege to see so many volunteers and young people recognised for the difference they make within our communities. The event was a wonderful celebration of the power of volunteering and community spirit across Wrexham.” Gary Cass

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]After the event, everyone was let loose into Xplore!. They all had a fantastic time exploring the exhibits, and learning through play.

Even Mayor Kent got stuck in, having a go at the reaction-time wall. He graciously got a low score, so that the young people could easily beat him.

All in all, it was a fantastic night that started with pizza, moved through celebrating the hard work of the young people, and ended with fun.

A big thank you to all the people who came and helped us celebrate Volunteers’ Week! and a big thank you to all the volunteers that make it happen![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”197850″][vc_single_image image=”197849″][vc_single_image image=”197851″][vc_single_image image=”197852″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][ld_spacer][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”197881″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]Xplore! is the premier Science Discovery Centre in North Wales attracting families,  tourists, community groups, and school groups of all ages. Xplore! is a visitor attraction and educational charity in the heart of Wrexham.  As a subsidiary company to Wrexham University we exist to see the local and regional communities actively engaged with and passionate about science, enriching the lives of over 70,000 visitors every year. [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

    AVOW Volunteers at Focus Wales

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Thank you to the amazing volunteers who kept everyone safe and happy at Focus Wales on the Weekend (6-8th of May). We were especially happy to see one of our young influencers supporting the crew!

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”197829″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”197830″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”197831″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The volunteer already gave their time volunteering at AVOW. In one of their regular meetings with our Volunteer Development Manager, Amy, they mentioned they were doing sound at Coleg Cambria, and would love experience. Amy connected them with Focus Wales, and these volunteers gained some amazing experience for the future.

As Wrexham works towards their bid for City of Culture, volunteering will form an important and vital part of that work. Volunteers support all kinds of cultural events throughout Wrexham city, from events like Focus Wales, through to being trustees on charitable boards. Without volunteers, many of the amazing events around the city simply wouldn’t happen. It is volunteers like those that Focus Wales that help make poetry evenings happen, that support board game days, and help ensure the city celebrates with pride.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]If you would like more information about volunteering, or need support to get started on your volunteering journey, don’t hesitate to contact our volunteer centre on volunteer@avow.org[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][ld_spacer][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_single_image image=”197839″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”3/4″][vc_column_text]FOCUS Wales is an international music showcase festival & BAFTA-Qualifying film festival, taking place in multiple venues across the city of Wrexham, North Wales. • Wrexham Celebrates Global Intergenerational Week

    Wrexham Celebrates Global Intergenerational Week

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Intergenerational Week celebrates meaningful connections between generations, and Wrexham did just that. A wide range of indoor and outdoor activities and workshops were enjoyed by people of all ages, providing opportunities for individuals at different stages of life to spend time together.

These events were made possible through services working in partnership to deliver activities within communities, supported by volunteers as part of WCBC’s Ageing Well Wrexham programme.

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]AVOW captured volunteers from Bradley Bowling Club and WCBC Active Wrexham supporting children from a local school to take part in bowling. New skills were learned, and many conversations were shared across generations.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”197821″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”197822″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”197823″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]AVOW also attended a session at Erddig National Trust, where participants had the opportunity to learn or teach crocheting skills. Even Phil, our Media Manager, took the chance to refresh his crochet skills during the session.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”197818″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”197820″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”197819″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The weather was kind on both occasions, allowing participants to enjoy the great outdoors and further enhance wellbeing.

Other fantastic sessions held in Wrexham during Intergenerational Week included:

    • Wellbeing session at Pen y Cae Football Club with Groundwork NW

Top Tips for completing the Volunteering Awards nomination form:

    Give information

    • Please give names of everyone in your group when you are nominating so that we can write them all a certificate

    • Let the nominee know that you are nominating them and that they will be invited to the celebration event and will need to sign up to attend

    Can’t persuade your volunteers?

    • So many volunteers do not think that would they do is anything special – we want to remind them what they do is amazing. Without volunteers so much in Wrexham just would not happen.
    • Remember nominating your volunteer will be good publicity for your organisation and most volunteers will be happy to promote the organisation if a little shy to promote themselves.

  • Congratulations to Race Council Cymru!

    Congratulations to Race Council Cymru!

[vc_row][vc_column][ld_spacer][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Towards the end of Last Year, AVOW launched their Ty AVOW regeneration survey, offering a chance for those that enter to win £100 for their charity, and £25 for themselves.

The regeneration survey is part of Ty AVOW’s exciting ambition to regeneration their home on 21 Egerton Street into a welcoming space for the voluntary and community sector in Wrexham. This 3.5-million-pound plan looks to turn Ty AVOW into a carbon-neutral, energy efficient community space. The redevelopment, designed by Lawray Architects, will include modern and affordable offices, meeting spaces and a flexible event area for up to 75 people. Designed with welcome and accessibility in mind.  [/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

“This regeneration brings something unique to Wrexham – a multifunctional space designed for and by the voluntary and community sector. Ty AVOW is our home, but it’s also yours” – Dawn Roberts-McCabe, AVOW’s Chief Officer said.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”197331″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”197487″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]To ensure AVOW heard from as wide an audience as possible, AVOW launched a public consultation to its members and the wider voluntary and community sector. Always looking for ways to give back, AVOW offered every entrant a chance to a £100 for their charity, and £25 for themselves.

The winner of this draw was Kofo Oladunjoye, Project Manager at Race Council Cymru. Kofo won for their organisation £100, and £25 for themselves.

Kofo had this to say about their win: [/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

“At Race Council Cymru, we work to promote racial equality, challenge discrimination, and empower communities and Organisations across Wales through advocacy, training, and community-led projects. We’re passionate about strengthening communities and creating more inclusive opportunities, and we value the role Ty AVOW plays in supporting regeneration and grassroots organisations that make a real difference.”

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]AVOW are really pleased to been able to give back in this way. The regeneration survey is still open for those that would like to leave a comment (though the prize door has now closed).

  • Wrexham Community Lottery – Helping people buy tickets for your cause

Wrexham Community Lottery – Helping people buy tickets for your cause

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The Wrexham Community Lottery is an amazing way for people to support your good cause. People can buy tickets as a one-off, or they can sign up for a regular donation. The draw happens every week, with your supporter having a chance to win anything from extra tickets for the next draw (which increases their chance of winning the big prize), to £25 all the way up to £25,000!

For every ticket, the supporters’ chosen charity get %50 of the ticket price. With just 50 tickets sold, you could raise £1,300 for your charity – and all you have to do is to tell people about the lottery. Everything else is dealt with, so you can relax and focus on what really matters – helping the people your charity is set up to help.

From a single ticket purchase, %50 goes directly to the nominated cause, and %10 goes to the central fund, AVOW. This money is then used to help and support local charities throughout Wrexham. That means that a total of %60 of the ticket price supports local charities!

The Wrexham Community Lottery has over 60 good causes, but many of them have very few tickets. We see causes sign up, and get a flurry of tickets in the first few weeks, but then nothing – because the cause forgets to remind people that they have a lottery page.

We know that advertising the Lottery can be hard, so we at AVOW want to make this as easy as possible. We have put together a simple frame that you can use, as well as some wording that you can cut and paste – it’s even bilingual. We’ve also included instructions on how to find your page on the Wrexham Community Lottery, so you can direct people straight to where they can buy tickets that support your cause.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

    Finding Your Cause Page

    [/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

This page is the page that you want to share with your supporters. You’ll see the URL in the top bar of your browser now has the word ‘Support’ in it, and your organisations name (or a shortened form of it). For example:

    https://www.wrexhamcommunitylottery.co.uk/support/wrexham

This is the URL for AVOW on the Wrexham Community Lottery.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

    Using The Frames

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]AVOW have put together some simple frames for you to use on Social Media to advertise the Wrexham Community Lottery. You use them by simply downloading the frame, and opening them up in your photo editor. If your not sure which one to use, you can sign up for your free account at Canva. Note: Canva offers their full version for FREE to eligible charities.

You can find the frames by clicking on the examples below, and downloading the picture.

    In Canva

    1.  Create a new Instagram Square Post
    2. Upload the frames
    3. Find a picture that represents the work of your organisation, or your logo. Here we used a picture from our AGM.
    4. Put the picture onto the Instagram Square
    5. Put the frame onto the same picture.
    6. You might find the picture and frame need adjusting. Start by making the frame big enough to fit the square. We’ll fix the picture in the next step.
    7. Click on the picture, and choose Position. A box will appear on the left. At the top of that box, choose Layers. You should now be able to see your picture, and the frame ontop of it. You can move the layers up and down by clicking on them and dragging. You want the frame at the top, and your picture in the middle.
    8. Click on your picture in the Layers list. This should put some white dots and the corners. You can now adjust your picture to fit the frame by using these white dots to adjust the picture.
    9. Once your happy with it, download the completed picture. You can do this by clicking ‘File’ then ‘Download’. Make sure that the ‘File Type’ box that now pops up says ‘PNG’.
    10. Click ‘Download’.

    You can now use the picture on your social media.[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”197408″ onclick=”custom_link” enable_link=”enable_image_link” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Favow.org%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2FWrexham-Community-Lottery-Supporter-Square-English.png|||”][vc_column_text]Click For an English Supporter Frame[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”197411″ onclick=”custom_link” enable_link=”enable_image_link” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Favow.org%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2FWrexham-Community-Lottery-Support-Square-Welsh.png|||”][vc_column_text]Click For a Welsh Support Frame[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]
