Q: What Does AVOW stand for?

A: AVOW stands for the Association of Voluntary Organisations in Wrexham.

AVOW is the County Voluntary Council for Wrexham appointed by the Welsh Government to support third sector organisations. Third Sector is a term for the range of organisations including voluntary and community organisations, registered charities and associations, self-help groups and community groups, social enterprises, mutuals and co-operatives, also known as the Charity Sector or Community and Voluntary Sector. Any voluntary or community organisation can become a member of AVOW to receive assistance and help shape our future.

To support voluntary and community sectors achieve their missions for the benefit of the community within Wrexham County Borough.

AVOW’s Mission

To enable the voluntary and community sectors to achieve their missions for the benefit of the community within Wrexham County Borough. AVOW will:

  • Support the development of individuals and organisations within the voluntary and community sectors
  • Establish and sustain good practice
  • Undertake the provision of services appropriate to the voluntary and community sectors
  • Consult, represent and champion the voluntary and community sectors locally and nationally

AVOW was established in 1988 and is a registered Charity and a Company Limited by Guarantee.

What is a County Voluntary Council (CVC)?

CVCs support the local voluntary and community sector, whilst WCVA has a national remit. AVOW is the CVC for Wrexham County Borough. AVOW works with charities, voluntary and community groups, social enterprises, trustees, individual volunteers, carers and service users.

AVOW is part of Third Sector Support Wales (TSSW)

The collective name given to the network of support organisations for the Third Sector in Wales, consisting of 19 County Voluntary Councils (CVCs) in Wales as well as Wales Council for Voluntary Action (WCVA).

The shared goal is to enable the Third Sector and volunteers across Wales to contribute fully to individual and community well-being, now and in the future.

The focus of our collective work will concentrate on four pillars of activity:

  • Volunteering
  • Good governance
  • Sustainable funding
  • Engagement and influencing

Who else is based at Tŷ AVOW?

Tŷ AVOW (located in central Wrexham – 21 Egerton St, Wrexham, LL11 1ND) accommodates the majority of AVOW staff, comprising a large meeting room, a medium-sized meeting room, and two smaller meeting/interview rooms available for hire.
