Wrexham City of Culture 2025: Judges’ Visit, 11/05/22

“On Wednesday 11th May the AVOW Play & Community Development Team had the opportunity to be part of the promotion of children’s play in Wrexham Town Centre, as part of the City of Culture 2025 bid!

At AVOW (and across the sector and County) we recognise that play is one of the most important aspects of children’s (and adults) lives so to be part of a mini festival of play was both refreshing and encouraging! The event was to showcase the brilliant work that play providers do in Wrexham for children and young people and to show that Wrexham might just be the ‘Capital of Play!’

A network of play providers including Playworkers from The Land, Wrexham County Borough Council Play / YouthTeam, Wrexham Youth & Play Partnership, The Venture, Gwenfro Valley Adventure Playground and Assemble Play all came together and transformed the whole area into a playful haven, full of vibrant colour and opportunity.

The streets were full of opportunities such as table tennis, chalking, circus skills and Go Karts, with many children wandering into the magical material world that had been created only to re-appear in fancy dress! The hippodrome site itself was turfed over and included graffiti board, cardboard tubes, a sand pit, giant balloons, and a large jumping platform with crash mats.

The air was filled with laughter and excitement and the sun eventually came out too, after a very soggy start! There were also some wonderful musical performances from some very talented musicians outside Yellow And Blue which added to the brilliant atmosphere.

Although there will have been some very soggy, painty and sandy school uniforms, a great day was had by all, and now we wait to see what the judges thought of it all…”
