AVOW Community Knockout: A big thank you to the whole community!

The Association of Voluntary Organisations in Wrexham (AVOW) was proud to host its Community Knockout on Sunday 3rd of July at Plas Madoc fields, adjacent to the Leisure Centre. The event was funded through the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board ‘Winter Pressures’ grant, in order to improve the well-being of staff and volunteers within voluntary organisations.

Teams of up to 10 members from local, voluntary, non-profit and private organisations registered to compete in various games whilst raising money for charities or community groups, cheered on by friends, colleagues and the public.

AVOW’s own team, ‘AVOW Warriors,’ competed alongside teams from the following organisations: Dynamic, Advance Brighter Futures, We Are Plas Madoc, ‘The Land’ Parents, Wrexham & Flintshire Children’s University, and Wrexham County Borough Council (alongside a second team from WCBC’s Housing Department). All money raised by AVOW from this event will go directly into their ‘Making A Difference Fund,’ to distribute in grants for local voluntary and community groups.

During the six games (which saw plenty of water and foam, stumbling giants, bouncy castles and racing penguins), plenty of laughs were had by all, and it was wonderful to see so many vital organisations within Wrexham’s community come together to compete and share in the spirit of the event. The teams certainly embraced the competitive mindset: Congratulations to the well-deserved winners, WCBC’s ‘HOT’ team!

AVOW gives special thanks to: Wrexham County Borough Council for the use of the land, North Wales Fire and Rescue Service for providing water, registered charity We Are Plas Madoc (WAPM) for handling the registrations, Off Limits ® Event Professionals for being such wonderful and entertaining hosts and conducting the games, and to Brian Cameron, Mayor of Wrexham, for his support – and for giving a speech to launch the event.

AVOW’s Chief Officer, Dawn Roberts McCabe, said, “The AVOW Community Knockout was such a playful representation of the Wrexham community spirit! We are delighted that we were able to utilise funding from the BCUHB Winter Pressures grant to improve well-being for our team and other community organisations. We hope to find a corporate sponsor so that we can recreate the event on a larger scale, and with even more fundraising opportunities, in summer 2023!”

Feedback from all involved has been so overwhelmingly positive that AVOW are already preparing to run a similar event in the future, and are actively seeking a corporate sponsor for next year: Further updates will be published on their website (avow.org), across their social media profiles, and through their email news bulletins.
